Safeguard Your Home: Water Damage Prevention for the Fall | SERVPRO of Westfield

9/3/2024 (Permalink)

bright orange and yellow fall foliage in the gutter of a residential home Safeguarding your home from water damage is easy this Fall with these insights from SERVPRO of Westfield!

As the seasons shift and we approach the cozy embrace of fall in our corner of Texas, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the cooler temperatures and changing colors. But don’t let the allure of pumpkin-spiced everything distract you from an important homeowner responsibility: protecting your home from potential water damage. At SERVPRO of Westfield, we’re here to help you stay ahead of the curve when it comes to safeguarding your property against the unpredictable fall weather.

Understanding Fall Weather in Texas

Westfield, like many parts of the Lone Star State, experiences a unique set of weather patterns during the fall. While the temperatures begin to drop from the sweltering summer highs, rainfall can become more frequent and sometimes unpredictable. On average, Westfield receives about 4-5 inches of rain in the fall, with occasional thunderstorms that can bring even heavier downpours.

This increase in precipitation combined with falling leaves and other debris can lead to potential water damage risks for your home. Gutters can become clogged, roofs can develop leaks, and poor drainage can lead to water pooling around your foundation. Taking proactive steps now can save you from costly repairs and headaches down the line.

Essential Tips to Prevent Water Damage This Fall
  1. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts: Leaves and debris can accumulate in your gutters, causing blockages that prevent proper water drainage. This can lead to overflow and water damage to your roof and walls. Make it a priority to clean your gutters and downspouts regularly throughout the fall season.

  2. Inspect Your RoofLook for any signs of damage, such as missing or loose shingles, and repair them promptly. A small leak can quickly turn into a major problem during a heavy rainstorm.

  3. Check Your Foundation and Slope: Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling and seeping into your basement or crawl space. Consider installing a sump pump if you live in an area prone to flooding.

  4. Seal Windows and Doors: Cracks around windows and doors can allow water to seep in. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal any gaps and prevent moisture from entering your home.

  5. Install a Rain Barrel: Collecting rainwater in a barrel can help manage excess water and reduce the strain on your gutters. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly way to water your garden during dry spells.

At SERVPRO of Westfield, we understand that every home is unique, and the right water damage prevention plan should be tailored to your specific needs. Our team of professionals is ready to assist you with comprehensive inspections and expert advice on how to keep your home safe this fall.

Don’t wait for the next storm to find out if your home is protected. Contact SERVPRO of Westfield today to schedule a home inspection and learn more about our water damage prevention services.

Dealing With Mold After a Leak | SERVPRO of Westfield

5/1/2024 (Permalink)

water dripping from ceiling into a large puddle on tile floor Trust our team at SERVPRO of Westfield to provide comprehensive services for a full recovery for all your water damage restoration needs.

A water leak in your house certainly doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend your day. A washing machine that decided to wash the floor or an open window during a rainstorm can ruin a day.

You may reach for towels or a mop, but many water leaks are far more destructive than you may realize. Even a little bit of water can run away pretty quickly, finding every nook and cranny in the process.

The sooner you get professional help, the less damage your home will endure.

Addressing Water Leaks

When water ends up in all the wrong places inside your home, it can lead to utter chaos. Leaks can seep under your floors, behind your walls and into several other hard-to-reach places all over.

Go ahead and dry up water that you see when you come across a leak in your home, but as you do, try to get an idea of where it may have flowed into. Water that ends up in a tight space that doesn’t have a lot of airflow won’t dry up on its own. Instead, these areas can stay moist for a long time, creating the perfect atmosphere for disaster.

As moisture hangs out, metal structures can start to rust while wooden support systems might begin to break down. Mold can also grow and, in as little as a day, spread rapidly. That means you could be dealing with a dangerous outbreak along with water damage—all from a simple leak.

Following Your Nose

One of the most common signs that mold has started growing in your home is a musty odor. If you have recently handled a leak somewhere in your house and now notice an earthy, wet smell, use your nose to try and locate the source. It may be challenging to find exactly where the problem is, as often mold sets up behind your walls.

Fortunately, our professionals are experts not just in water damage restoration but also in mold remediation and odor removal. When we start tackling the damage left behind from a water leak, like warped walls and swollen flooring, we will also seek out mold problems. With sanitization, removal and other remediation techniques, our crew will get your home completely clear of damages.

As we work, we will isolate areas where mold has caused odors in order to ventilate the air and remove any remaining particles. Every area of your home will be sanitized and sealed in order to ensure growth can’t start again. Whatever we can do to make your house feel—and smell—like home again will be done.

Don’t ignore signs of a water leak. Contact SERVPRO® for a full recovery.

The Places Water Likes to Hide | SERVPRO of Westfield

1/2/2024 (Permalink)

close up of condensation on window pane and ledge Water damage can happen anywhere in your home. Call SERVPRO of Westfield to restore water damage on your property 24/7, 365.

How often do you use water during the day? From hosing down the dog after a muddy romp to running a load of dishes in the dishwasher, having water whenever we need it makes our lives a whole lot easier. It makes our lives easier until it ends up in the wrong places, at least.

Whether it is Mother Nature throwing us for a loop or an appliance failure, water moves fast and can cause a whole lot of damage. When you get to know the most common places your home may be affected by water damage, though, you can take action to prevent it.

Under Your Sinks

Your kitchen and your bathrooms are both prime locations for potential water leaks that could lead to extensive damage. Under your sinks, there are likely multiple waterlines leading in different directions, and this combined with the items you have stored can make finding a drip hard to do.

Put checking under all your sinks on your weekly to-do list. Look for the obvious signs, like drops of water or puddles. Feel around all of the water lines under your sink, checking for deterioration or excess moisture.

Make sure that all of the connecting points are tight and replace anything that has started to wear out. Leaks under the sink can seep under your floor or into cabinets, so the faster you find them the better.

Beneath Appliances

Our appliances are another thing in our home that make our days easier, but they are also susceptible to water leaks. When an appliance has a small leak, it can be hard to find. They often start under or behind the appliance, which means they can drip long-term unnoticed.

Pull out your dishwasher, washing machines and refrigerator every few months for a deep cleaning. Check the area under and behind them for signs of water damage. Mold growth, soft spots in the floor or drops of water are all warning signs that you have a leak and need to dig a little deeper to find and correct it.

Behind Your Walls or Floors

There are a lot of reasons why even a small leak can be detrimental to your home, but one of the biggest ones is all the other places that water can get into. Water moves quickly, and it will find its way into every crevice, opening or crack. That means that any leak can result in damage behind your wall or under your floor.

Pay close attention if you think you smell a musty odor. A squeaky spot in the floor is another red flag that you should spend some more time investigating potential issues.

Around Your Windows and Doors

When the internal temperature or external temperatures dip from high to low in a day, it can lead to condensation on your windows. While this might be common, it could lead to structural damage as water seeps into the structure of your home. Condensation can hang out a lot longer than you think.

Run your hands around the windowframes and doorframes in your home every few weeks to feel for moisture. Check to ensure your seals don’t have any gaps, and fill in any caulking that has worn down.

Even if you do find damage in your home from a source of water, don’t let it worry you. With a single call to SERVPRO®, you can get restoration started fast. We are ready to handle anything from a total flood to structural damage done after a leak hid out too long. Whatever your home needs, we’ve got you covered.

Don’t ignore signs of water damage! Call SERVPRO for a quick restoration.

When Rain Invades Your Home | SERVPRO of Westfield

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

image of a large body of water during a rain storm with ripples caused by the heavy downpour Water damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Westfield on the case!

Oh, the sweet sound of rain pitter pattering on the roof. Rain can be a refreshing gift that leaves the world feeling calm and new. It brings new life to the green world outside and creates a kind of peace on a hot day.

When rain is needed, it is certainly great, but rain can also come in fast and furious, creating widespread issues. Heavy rain can quickly leave roads covered with water and yards full of mud, all while challenging gutter systems. When rain gets heavy, it often comes with other threats, too, like high winds that can serve to drive flooding.

SERVPRO of Westfield wants to help you keep your home safe and ensure you are always prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings. We are also always right around the corner, ready to dry your home out when things do get intense.

Hazards of Intense Rain

Flooding has always been an issue in Harris County. A major flooding event happens at least every two years. There has been a lot of investments in protecting our towns from floods, but we know we still can’t control what Mother Nature is going to do.

While flooding is a consistent threat, there are a lot of other ways severe weather affects our part of Texas. Strong thunderstorms, tornadoes and high winds are year-round possibilities. When rain picks up, we know that roads will be covered and flash floods could sweep away anything in their path.

With so many potential hazards from severe weather, we know that staying prepared is crucial for staying safe. When severe weather is predicted, keep a close eye on local news reports and start putting your emergency plans into action.

Staying Safe

Safety should always be your priority when it comes to preparing your home. If you are on the road when a storm is predicted, find a safe place to shelter or head home if you can. Avoid low-lying areas or any roads that are known to flood.

At home, bring inside anything you can and park your car in a safe place. Move things that can’t be replaced from your basement or lower level, and put important paperwork in a watertight container. If water starts coming in while you are there, stay on an upper level until the threat is passed. Flood water moves fast, and the drier you can stay the safer you will stay. Cut the power to your home if you can safely do so.

Future Prevention Strategies

If your home has taken on floodwaters, give us a call as soon as you can safely do so. We can start your recovery 247, and the faster we are able to dry things out, the less damage you will have. While we are working through your recovery, we will also help you make some decisions about strengthening your home ahead of another storm.

Bring in a professional to add grading to your yard. Slopes and organic material can ensure water runs away from your home and is absorbed quickly, even when the rain is heavy. You might also consider a sump pump for your basement or underneath your home. Sump pumps force water away from the structure of your home and can go a long way in preventing a basement flood.

With a professional restoration crew right around the corner, you can rest a little easier knowing we are always here for you. Our professionals have the training and the equipment to put your home back together fast—and help you keep it safe in the future.

We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.

Where to Spot Water Damage Lurking Inside Your Home | SERVPRO® of Westfield

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”bucket” alt = " blue bucket in the middle of the living area catching water falling from the ceiling ” > Think you may have water damage in your home? Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Westfield to find the source.

Water damage has numerous harmful features, such as the capacity to rapidly grow and cause substantial losses. Aside from these bothersome traits, water damage has a habit of remaining concealed until it manifests itself in the form of mold, leaks and serious damage.

Recognizing where hidden water damage most commonly occurs will help you catch these sneaky concerns before they get any worse. To keep water at bay, there are a few important spots in your home you should monitor to ensure damage hasn’t found a hiding spot.

Pay attention to these important areas to avoid a sneaky water emergency:

Your roof. When’s the last time you traveled up to your Westfield roof to check for damage? If you haven’t climbed up there in a while, you might have a hidden water problem on your hands.

Water damage can also develop extremely slowly over time on your roof, so you might notice a little leak and dismiss it only for it to develop into a significant problem when the hidden leak is left unattended.

Your attic may potentially sustain water damage that originates on the roof, resulting in another unseen hazard. Sneaky leaks and an increase in moisture make your dark and dim attic a hotspot for mold growth!

In your bathroom. Water damage, especially the stealthy sort, is almost always found in the bathroom. The bathroom fixtures we use can quickly malfunction and create water concerns that can be hard to spot.

A slow drain, a leaky faucet and water puddles are all indicators of water damage in your sink. Your bathtub and toilet could present similar issues, with water spots accumulating at the base and an excess of bathroom moisture.

Bathroom water damage isn’t usually obvious right away, so you’ll have to do some digging to make sure everything is in working order. Remember to check your plumbing as well and schedule repairs as soon as they are needed

Other appliances. Household appliances are meant to make life easier, but when they malfunction, they might end up hiding a major water emergency. Water can hide deep beneath these massive machines, keeping signs of damage hidden.

While inspecting your appliances for damage, move them away from the wall to get a better look.

It can be beneficial to perform a brief check for hidden damage before using your appliances. It can also help to replace your old appliances as soon as you can so you can avoid a future water disaster.

Appliance Upkeep Can Help You Prevent Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Westfield

4/21/2023 (Permalink)

a blue and white hot water heater showing signs of a water leak ” Have water damage in your home from an appliance? SERVPRO of Westfield is always on call ready to help,

Chores around the house would be much more of a challenge without the help of our convenient appliances. But although these gadgets can be extremely useful in the home, they can also cause significant damage to your property if they fail unexpectedly.

Water damage is a frequent outcome of malfunctioning appliances, and it can be a challenge to detect problems before they wreak havoc on your home.

Being aware of the warning signs of a future water damage emergency is the best way to protect your Westfield home from an inconvenient malfunctioning appliance.

Regular Maintenance

Regularly checking for water damage is one of the most effective methods for avoiding it. All it takes is a quick check after every use to prevent expensive damage in many cases!

Leaks may be concealed beneath your refrigerator or dishwasher, so you’ll need to search for indicators of damage like wet spots. Pushing larger appliances to the side once a year to perform a deep-clean is another way to catch problems before they worsen.

Your HVAC system is also a machine that could cause undetected water damage in your house. Besides calling in a professional for a checkup once a year, you should also be searching on your own for excess moisture and signs of mold growth near your vents and unit.

Your water heater is another appliance that needs consistent attention. Remember to check for puddling, excess moisture and mold around the unit just like you do for other large appliances.

Yearly or Long-Term Maintenance

Consistent maintenance can save you from serious water damage, but it also helps to have your appliances serviced on the schedule advised by the producer.

Inspect the hoses and tubing connected to your fridge, washing machine and dishwasher for punctures, kinks and other indicators of damage. Keeping parts in good condition is crucial to keeping your appliances in working order, so make sure to repair and replace as needed!

Additionally, while each appliance has a different shelf life, a good rule of thumb for replacing outdated equipment is 10 to 15 years.

To prevent unexpected, costly damage, you should act fast when you notice any appliance water damage. You could make use of your handy appliances to their fullest for many years if you catch issues early on!

Have water damage in your home from an appliance or another source? Our team is here to help, so call us day or night.

Make Waterproofing Your Home a Top Priority in the New Year | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/19/2023 (Permalink)

"water failing from a sink do to a clogged drain” Have water damage in your home? Contact SERVPRO of Westfield for quick and professional restoration.

The beginning of a new year is the ideal time to take control of your life and pinpoint any areas that need a little improvement. You typically might only set goals for yourself, but have you considered making a resolution list for your home, too?

As you organize your 2023 game plan, leave some room for water damage protection.

Water damage is a common challenge many homeowners face, but with a few new changes to your daily routine, you can safeguard the home you love. Here are the reasons why waterproofing your property is so vital, as well as the measures you can take to get started.

What Causes Water Damage?

As you start protecting your home, it’s a good idea to be aware of the places water can sneak in. Water can infiltrate your home from the inside and outside.

Gutters clogged with debris and heavy rainfall are two common ways water seeps in from the outside, while household appliances and bathroom equipment create leaks from within your home.

Tattered pipes or aged caulk around your windows and doors are two other ways water might find its way into your home. When leakage like this goes unnoticed, mold growth and a weakened infrastructure are sure to emerge.

Water damage requires prompt attention, or else damage will develop and only intensify over time. The good news is that detecting leakage is simple as long as you know what to look for.

How to Prevent Damage

Water damage prevention may appear to be a difficult endeavor, but there are many simple ways to make big changes to protect your home. Catching a leak early is one of the most efficient methods for staying on top of water damage, and regular inspection makes it even easier.

As you snoop around for sneak water leaks, check your bathrooms and kitchen every now and then for damp areas or mold growth.

When it’s raining, check your windows to ensure water isn’t dripping inside. Because water damage might emit a foul odor, you can also sniff around to find the source of the problem.

Upkeeping your roof often to make sure your shingles are in place can protect your entire home from damage. Don’t forget to clear your gutters and downspouts of debris while you’re up there!

Maintaining your roof is particularly important when it comes to extreme weather, one of the most aggressive sources of water damage. Here in Westfield, we’ve seen weather threats of all kinds, with the most common being flooding and hurricanes. Severe weather, like many of the examples above, can be scary, but you can prepare your home to ensure that no water gets inside.

Grading your yard may help protect your home from large amounts of water when the weather turns sour. Create an incline of soil to send water flowing far from your newly waterproofed home.

This year, you can make significant improvements in all aspects of your life while also avoiding lengthy and costly repairs!

Protecting Your Property From Flooding | SERVPRO® of Westfield

10/20/2022 (Permalink)

a group of residential homes with major flooding in back yards Experienced water damage in your home? Call SERVPRO of Westfield to get the restoration process started right away.

Not everyone realizes how important flood protection is. Some areas that are at lower risk of flooding do not have resources available to help with cleanup and restoration, so preventing property damage in the first place is an important step in mitigating repair costs.

Fortunately, you can take steps to protect your home both inside and out. Understanding the regional risks we face is important to understanding how and why preparation is key.

Texas is at risk of severe storms, which can cause flood conditions. Excessive water can enter your home and create damage, potentially promoting mold growth over time.

Now that you understand why flood protection is important in Westfield, you can take the steps to protect your home and property.

Protecting Your Property Outside Your Home

Take the time to prepare your home outside to prevent damage to the inside of your home.

Keeping gutters clear of debris allows water to freely flow through them. Without an obstruction, water is less likely to puddle around the foundation and enter the home in the first place.

Creating a nice landscape on your property can also prevent flood damage. A large garden pulls water into the soil, to the roots and away from the surface. Mulch can also create a slope that pushes away from your home, which helps protect the structure and foundation of your home.

Financially investing in a few upgrades when possible is also a good idea. Anchoring fuel tanks and adding rain barrels can be helpful during severe weather. The rain barrels collect the rainwater, which can then be used to water the plants in your garden!

Protecting Inside Your Home

Shoring up your foundation and sealing your basement should be the first things on your list to protect the inside of your home. Seal the cracks in your home’s foundation as soon as possible and purchase a sump pump for your basement.

While these are financial investments, they are important for protecting your property from damage and reducing higher costs in the long run.

When it comes to preventing flooding inside your home, regular home maintenance goes a long way.

The top reasons that homes flood from the inside include failed and worn plumbing. A leak sensor, which may be offered with your home security system, can help minimize the risk of water damage.

Make sure to keep your emergency plan handy and easily accessible for when flooding occurs. Minimize damage to precious items, including papers and irreplaceable photographs, by storing them up high in waterproof containers.

You already know that SERVPRO is the most trusted name in restoration, but we want to help you become the first line of defense for your home. One type of damage you’re likely to encounter as a homeowner is flooding or water damage.

This could start out with something as simple as a leaky faucet that turns into something much worse. The average household leak can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water in a year.

Water damage progresses rapidly, seeping into floors, walls and soft surfaces. It’s crucial to address the issue right away to produce the best results.

We have simplified the water damage timeline down to these key points you need to know:

In the First 24 Hours

Your Westfield home could have up to a one in four chance of a flood damaging it within a 30-year period in a high-risk area.

The first 24 to 48 hours after flooding or water damage are crucial. Certain items will immediately fall victim to water’s disastrous effects. Some paper-based belongings, porous materials and soft furnishings, will be seriously harmed by water exposure.

In addition, mold can begin to develop within this timeframe. Knowing what to do next is essential.

SERVPRO’s expertise and “restore vs. replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. If any materials cannot be successfully restored, this will be communicated to you. These materials are typically removed as soon as possible to expedite the drying of all restorable materials.

Within the First Week

Once you have surpassed the first 24 to 48 hours, the damage will get much worse and quickly. Mold will make an appearance throughout your home’s structure, thriving off of excess moisture.

Additionally, porous surfaces, such as wood surfaces and walls, will become increasingly compromised, and metal surfaces will start corroding.

After One Week

It’s best to get help far before this point, but we understand that things happen that are beyond your control. By this point, there may be catastrophic or even irreversible damage, and the likelihood of structural decay will be high, but SERVPRO is here for you regardless.

How SERVPRO Will Help

Whatever you need our experts to take on, they will. SERVPRO’s restoration process begins with the first call, preferably within the first 24 hours. Service work normally starts with a thorough extraction of water. This helps prevent the spread of water in the structure and reduces drying time.

There’s a strong chance floors, furniture and other belongings will require cleaning, sanitizing and deodorization. After the bulk of the water has been removed, our specialists will use industry-leading drying equipment to remove the water you can’t see.

After these initial steps, your home may need construction work to get your property back to its preloss condition. This step could include minor repairs or rebuilding entire areas of your home.

Take advantage of our full services by allowing us to handle both the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding the affected areas. SERVPRO will keep you up to date on every step and have you back in your home or business in no time.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the drip: American homeowners experience a water emergency an astonishing 14,000 times a day. Multiplied millions of gallons of water spill into homes from everything from leaky pipes to floods every year.

When water is rushing in at home or you discover a soaked basement, you call SERVPRO. Then what?

Then this:

Emergency Contact. Your SERVPRO expert by chat or by phone will help you through some pertinent questions to discover the nature of your situation and help us know in a broad sense what we’re dealing with. Then we’ll figure out the best time to meet in person, and we’ll want it to be soon, for your sake.

Inspection and Water Damage Assessment. If water is still leaking or spilling in, stopping it will be our first priority. Then we can settle into a plan for removal, make note of any materials or items that will require replacement, and let you know about potential hazards in the home.

Water Removal. There’s not a bucket big enough to get rid of all that water, but we’ve got pumps to take it to a better place. We’ll do whatever’s necessary to get rid of those offending gallons of water.

Damaged Material Removal. As stated, we’ll have identified items that may need replacing, and after we get the mass of water removed, we can do that safely, leaving a safer, quicker drying process in front of us.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Deodorization. Water leaves stains, stenches and germs behind, even more so if the problem stems from a sewer backup or flood. Leave it to SERVPRO to get things cleaned up and safe for you.

Drying. Drying is a critical part of the process. Even when the bulk of the water is gone, a hyper-focus on drying means the prevention of mold.

Monitoring. We’re always watching! When things need adjusting, we’ll be there. When you’ve got questions, we’ll be there.

Repairs and Construction. The full SERVPRO experience isn’t finished until we restore, restore, restore. And what can’t be restored, we’ll rebuild. We’ll do everything possible to make your home look "Like it never even happened."

When water damage strikes, make the call to SERVPRO for A-to-Z cleanup and restoration. We’ll make your damaged property look "Like it never even happened."

House Flooding

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Kitchen Flooding on the kitchen floor due to a broken pipe.

Water flooding in your house, business, or place of work can happen at any time. Most of the reasons for flooding are due to pipes breaking, backed up septic tanks, and/or water heaters. When those times happen we dry up the areas and think everything is dry and fine. But what most people do not realize is that moisture can be behind walls, cabinets, and rugs.

Here are some facts:

  • Mildew (mold in early stage) and molds grow on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, decaying leaves, and other organic materials. Mold growths, or colonies, can start to grow on a damp surface within 24 to 48 hours.
  • It is not visible right after it happens meaning if you do not get a rapid response on the matter it will grow.
  • Even if you dry the area it can be wet behind walls
  • Bleach does not stop the growth behind the walls.

What To Do After Flooding

  • Turn off Electric to the affected area
  • Call SERVPRO of Westfield
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after the removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Your Guide to Water Damage Repairs in Houston

water damage Do you have any water damage to your walls or ceiling? Contact SERVPRO of Westfield, we will help guide you through the restoration process.

If you have to file a water damage claim, you won’t be alone. Far from it, actually!

Did you know water damage claims have been growing steadily every year?

One in 50 American homeowners file one of these water damage claims each year. Even before the number of claims started rising, they were some of the most common claims made by homeowners.

You may be wondering when a leak and the resulting water issues become an issue that requires professional services and remediation help. Most homeowners aren’t sure.

You may know that some water can be cleaned up with towels or a mop and bucket if caught early enough. But if it’s more serious, water can start to damage your home within hours.

Here’s what you might see when your home has water damage that needs remediation by professionals:

Your windows or walls are warped. Wood in your home, like your window panes and walls, can start to warp if the water damage is severe. That means it’s vital if you notice these signs to get remediation help.

The floorboards or furniture show signs of damage. Wet wood will start to warp within days. If that happens in your home, it’s best to start seeking help from professionals who can help you restore your home.

You notice your home has a musty smell. Smell can be among the first signs of mold damage, meaning if you notice that scent, it’s time to call in a professional to help you deal with remediation issues.

If you have water damage in your home due to a burst pipe or another cause, you can count on us for restoration assistance. We have teams who are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services.

Water Damage: The Most Common Causes

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage has a wide range of effects on structures. Worst of all, water damage that isn't addressed right away, such as through water damage restoration, can eventually compromise a building's foundation. The worst thing about water damage is that it can happen at any time. No matter how great or small, SERVPRO of Westfield is waiting for your call!  Below is a list of common causes of water related loss:

Broken Pipe: Stoppages and damage are common in plumbing systems, especially in older homes. Look for cracks, bulges, stains, and other symptoms of moisture on your ceiling or flooring to prevent plumbing problems before they start. If you see a leak, it could indicate that there is also damage in other areas.

Increases in your water bill could also indicate that your landscaping, flooring, and foundation have been damaged. Look for pipes in places where water tends to collect, such as crawl spaces, cupboards, and attics. If you notice any evidence of water damage, contact someone as soon as possible to avoid further issues.

Washer Overflows: Leaky hoses are the most common cause of washing machine flooding. Over time, the leak may worsen, causing damage to your home.

Water Heater Overflow: If you have an old water heater, there is a good chance it will leak at some point. The same can be said for water heaters that have been neglected or improperly installed. An overabundance of tank pressure might also cause a leak. When a water heater leaks, the area will immediately get flooded. Water damage prevention is difficult, but not impossible. If you address the following potential reasons, you might be able to avoid or at least minimize water damage.

Broken appliance hoses: As appliances age, their pipes may corrode and their hoses may become brittle. Leaks from your dishwasher might create an unsightly puddle on your kitchen floor. Worn gaskets, broken doors, and clogged drains are all common sources. It has the potential to harm your tiling, electrical wiring, and paint.

Rising Water from Flooding: Hurricanes, thunderstorms, and floods can all bring a lot of water into your house, flooding it. Water that cannot be absorbed by the earth may overflow into your home. A flood alarm and warning system can help you prepare for a natural disaster and safeguard your home. If you live near a body of water, make sure you have flood insurance.

Air Conditioner Drip Pan Overflow: Condensation forms on the evaporator coil of your air conditioner, which drips into a drain pan and out the back of your house via a condensate drain line. Until the drain pan is destroyed or the condensate drain line is filled with dust or debris, this drainage system operates. Because the water can't get out, it will seep into your home through your air conditioner. All of the water spilling from your air conditioner may harm your floors and walls, as well as making your insulation wet.

Other causes:

  • Roof Leaks
  • Leaks from a Broken Window
  • Toilet or Bathtub Overflow
  • Fire Related Water Damage

Until you experience a water related loss you may not realize how important it is to hire a water damage specialist. SERVPRO of Westfield is trusted by insurance agents and property owners across Houston, TX and they are ready 24/7 to help you get back to life as you know it, "Like it never even happened.”

What To Do When Water Damage Arrives

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Houston has been bombarded with thunderstorms almost daily the last several weeks. These storms’ lightning and heavy rainfall have caused many of our Houston homes' roof damages and water damages. SERVPRO of Westfield has seen an increase of houses affected this summer, and some of the damages have been catastrophic. These emergency tips will assist homeowners and their families in taking the proper actions until SERVPRO of Westfield arrives. By following these Dos and DON’Ts, it will help to reduce the amount of damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

Water Damage from Clean Water (Rain Water)

DO:

  • Find the source of the water if possible and stop or block the water from entering the home.
  • Turn off the circuit breakers in the wet areas of the house. Be sure the access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock before doing so.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents, and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.
  • Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirts off damp floors.
  • Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

DON’T:

  • Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers, or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards.
  • Leave books, newspapers, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpets or floors to cause staining.
  • Leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, possibly causing electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
  • Turn off ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

CLEANING UP AFTER A FIRE

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are an estimated 370,000 house fires each year in the United States. These fires cost a total of $7 billion in total property damage. But what kind of fires are causing this damage and how are these fires cleaned up?

Types of Fires

There are three main types of fires that typically occur in homes across America; high-oxygen fires, low-oxygen fires, and kitchen fires. Each of these fires has its own aspects that allow them to create different types of damage. There are also different ways to properly clean them up.

A major factor that impacts the damage a fire cause is an oxygen. Oxygen is part of the fire triangle of heat, fuel, and oxygen.

High-oxygen Fire

High-oxygen fires produce dry soot which makes these easier to clean than the other main types of house fires. They can typically be cleaned using a low-alkali detergent with dry sponges.

Low-oxygen Fire

A low-oxygen fire is a little more difficult to clean than a high-oxygen fire as it produces greasy, wet soot. This wet, smoky residue causes the fire to smolder. These fires are usually cleaned using a high-alkaline detergent with warm water which can be used to wash walls and structures.

Kitchen Fire

Usually, the most challenging type of fire damage to clean is kitchen fires. The biggest challenge of these fires comes from the fact that the soot residue is difficult to detect. After kitchen fires, cabinets, drawers, and other appliances must be removed.

Cleaning Fires

Most of the damage that comes from fires doesn’t come from the actual flames but from the smoke and soot that the fire produces. This smoke and soot have the ability to penetrate the paint, carpet, upholstery, and clothes throughout the house. While some material in the affected home will need to be removed and disposed of, other materials are able to be cleaned. When the cleaning process takes place, there are some key aspects regardless of where the fire occurs.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Safety is the most important aspect when cleaning up a fire. Anyone cleaning up a fire should wear gloves, a protective mask, long-sleeved shirts, and pants. This equipment will help to minimize contact with the mold that could be dangerous. Again, professionals are trained to deal with mold so that it doesn’t harm them or anyone else in the house which is a major reason why only professionals should deal with mold.

Remove Contents from the Home

Regardless of what the material is that has been damaged, all contents inside the home should be removed. However, depending on what the specific material is that is being dealt with, it may not need to be discarded. While some materials do need to be discarded following a fire, others are able to be cleaned.

Ventilation

Ventilation is a key part of, not just putting out a fire, but also restoring a home after a fire. Smoke and soot create an uninhabitable environment in the building which is in need of fresh air. When the firefighters arrive on the scene, they will begin the ventilation process immediately to make the building safer. After they leave, ventilating will help by removing odors.

Additional Contaminants

While smoke and soot are responsible for the majority of the damage, lead and asbestos also can create an environment that is in need of restoration. If they become disturbed, what began as a simple fire restoration could become a serious environmental restoration.

Duct Cleaning

The smoke and soot that are a result of a fire can get trapped in the duct system of the building. Because of this, a thorough duct cleaning is required after any fire restoration. If a duct cleaning is not completed, there’s the possibility that contaminants and odors can spread to other areas of the home.

A fire in the home can be a devastating event. Depending on what type of fire occurs, the damage can force a small clean-up or a total clean-up. Either way, there are certain aspects of the restoration that will need to be completed. If you suffer a fire in your home, call on the professionals at SERVPRO to ensure a complete restoration.

What to know about dishwasher leaks

5/21/2020 (Permalink)

Dishwasher Leak Call SERVPRO of Westfield to help with your water damage (281) 907-0018.

For some people, dishwasher leaks start as a slow drip that may not be immediately noticed. Others discover dishwasher leaks as soap suds bubble their way across the kitchen floor.

Stopping leaks before they cause damage is ideal, but depending on the situation, is not always possible.

Time is critical when it comes to a water leak of any type. The faster you respond and take action to stop water from spilling onto your kitchen floor, the less damage that will be done – and that means less costly repairs!

What to do When Your Dishwasher Leaks

  1. If your dishwasher is leaking a significant amount of water, first turn off the dish washing cycle. For small leaks, it may be possible to capture the water with a towel or bowl and let the cycle finish first, but this is generally not recommended.
  2. Try to keep water from pooling on the floor. It’s easy for water to travel downwards and cause damage to your home’s structure out of sight. Use bowls, plates, and towels to capture and control the water flow.
  3. Clean up as much water as you can to minimize damage.
  4. Determine the cause of the leak. Every leak has its own particular cause, and your course of action may take a bit of detective work.
  5. Repair your dishwasher leak before it ruins your kitchen floor. Some flooring is more susceptible to water damage than others, such as wood or bamboo.

If you have an unexpected water damage call SERVPRO of Westfield (281) 907-0018. We are always here to help!

Sustaining a Water Damaged Roof

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

When it comes to water damage immediate action is crucial. Roofs of a Houston, TX home or business can experience major damage from heavy rains, strong winds, or falling debris. Applying a roof tarp in an attempt to reduce the possibility of additional damage seems like a good, inexpensive way to quickly cover the holes in the roof and stop a water leak, but this only allows for a temporary solution until safe inspection and repairs can be done.

Although a roof tarp has many benefits, it is not recommended as a permanent solution due to the following:

  • They all wear out over time.
  • Mold could grow in water affected areas of the damaged roof
  • Wind can move tarp, leaving leaking spaces uncovered
  • Tarp may increase heat, leading to higher electrical bill
  • Improperly installed may lead to pools of standing water, perfect for insects

SERVPRO of Westfield in Houston, TX is here to assist homeowners and commercial businesses with water mitigation and mold remediation. You have the right to protect your property as a home and business owner. Whether having coverage from you insurance company or not, here at SERVPRO of Westfield, our experienced team of technicians are here to assist in avoiding water damage and possible mold issues.

For your water mitigation needs, call SERVPRO of Westfield at (281) 907-0018, we're here to service you.

Tips For Preventing and Thawing Freezing Pipes

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

When freezing weather approaches in Houston, TX things can get rather problematic and this does not only include frozen roads. You could also become subjected to freeze created leaks. Due to frozen water expanding within pipes, it could crack the copper tubing. This not only limits your water supply, but when the pipes do defrost there may be a severe leakage repair. Luckily there are aids to prevent pipes from freezing.

Tips to Help Prevent Freezing Pipes:

  • Fix source of any drafts (i.e. dryer vents, bathroom fan vents, windows, ect) and insulate pipes in all areas devoid of heat, such as crawl spaces, basements, attic, and garage.
  • Keep doors to all rooms open to allow heat flow to all areas.
  • Keep all water-supply piping away from outside walls, where it could be exposed to cold weather
  • Open all faucets, both and hot and cold water, to just a trickle, to keep water moving in the pipes and prevent icing.
  • Open cabinets under the sinks so warm air temperature can flow around the plumbing. (Be sure to keep cleaners and other hazardous chemicals away from children and pets.)

For water mitigation needs, SERVPRO of Westfield is here to service you.

Flood Safety Tips: Houston, Texas

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

With the recent rain storms that the Houston and surrounding areas of Texas have been experiencing the past few days, sharing some basic flood safety tips may be very helpful. There is no good time for a flood.  No matter the size, minor or massive, a flood can cause a great deal of damage and poses a risk to people living and traveling through the flooded area.

To provide assistance to you, your family, home, and vehicles to aid in navigating through a flood without harm, follow these simple flood safety tips:

Prepare Before a Flood Hits

It may seem odd preparing for a flood before it even happens. However, if flooding is imminent, be prepared to leave your property. If floodwaters get too high, pack enough clothing and supplies to last a few days. Make sure to put important documents in your bag also. If time permits, try to move furniture and electronics to a second floor and flip off the circuit breakers to avoid electrical fires.

Keep Safe During a Flood

One of the most important flood safety tips to remember is to stay out of the water as much as possible. If you do have to evacuate during a flood, avoid walking through moving waters. As little as six inches of water can make an adult lose their balance and fall. Carry a walking stick with you to check for solid ground under the water ahead of you. Watch out for electrical equipment and fallen power lines.

If you’re driving during a flood, don’t attempt to drive through moving floodwaters. Two feet of moving water could be strong enough to wash your car away. If water begins to rise around your car, abandon the car if you’re able, and go to a safer area.

Dealing with the Aftermath

Return to your home only after being told it is safe to do so. You’ll need to begin the restoration process. Any remaining water should be removed as soon as possible. Everything within the home must be dried and disinfected quickly to prevent mold and mildew that can set in within 24 hours of the flooding. With SERVPRO of Westfield on your side we will help with all your water restoration needs. We are just one phone call away to make your flooding “Like it never even happened.”
